Chocolate Cheesecake: One Of Life's Simple Pleasures By Laura Weaver My life partner and I recently had one of the most wonderful "dates" of our relationship...a time of understanding...a night of appreciating true pleasures. We didn't spend the time at a fancy restaurant or a Broadway play. Neither did it happen during a lovely vacation getaway. This special night took place in our modest townhouse.
You might say that our relationship had grown a bit stale. Most couples who have been together as long as we have may experience the same sorts of feelings and actions. We had gotten to the point that we took each other for granted. We still found enjoyable experiences in our lives together, but we didn't seem to take notice of them as much as we used to. We still got along okay, but it was plain that we were both downright bored. When we understood that, it scared us. The point had arrived to bring some life back to the relationship that we still loved.
Our perfect night at home began without fanfare shortly after supper. I brought our dessert of chocolate cheesecake into the den and set it on the coffee table. The muted lighting was created by the softness of a few scented
Conversation didn't start immediately for us. We picked up our forks simultaneously and began eating our cheesecake. With the first mouthful, we were inspired by the decadent chocolate flavor we both enjoyed. It tasted wonderful. The creamy texture and tantalizing combination of sweet chocolate and tangy cheese awakened our dulled senses. The time for us to begin talking happened easily while we ate: first about the delicious chocolate cheesecake; then about more serious subjects. It was a talk we had needed to have for a long time.
We were able to talk about our problems and concerns; about our past and present expectations; about our future plans and dreams. We began to understand through this simple conversation with each other that unrealistic expectations were what caused problems between couples. We gained a deeper understanding and more genuinerespect for each other that night. We learned to be content in the beautiful life we were creating together.
As long as I live, as long as my boyfriend and I are together, I will always fondly remember the conversation we had that night while enjoying our chocolate cheesecake. That was the evening we knew we would make a lifelong commitment to each other, because we loved the familiarity we had with each other--plus we enjoyed the same simple pleasures in life. Sometimes it's just simple pleasures in life that keep adding sparkle...simple pleasures like chocolate cheesecake.
We probably could have had that conversation without the cheesecake, but it sure was a lot more fun with it!
